AMIE How To Get Started!

You can view an online demo of My AMIE here

AMIE is a preformatted group of files and folders that you can access easily using your web browser e.g. Internet Explorer.  They can be edited to meet your individual requirements whether that be for your sole use or for a group of colleagues with similar information needs (e.g clinical team, clinical network etc).  This allows you to have a professional looking quick interface that you can use in a clinical situation.  You can read resources directly from the screen or they can be printed out accordingly.

The files with 'htm' at the end are in a web-based format and can be therefore read by the web browser (e.g. index.htm, page 2.htm etc)

They can be edited using a number of web tools and it is suggested that you use whatever you are most familiar with.  The simplest way of editing a 'htm' file is using Microsoft Word which can save files in .htm format.

The following is a suggested route to get you started!

  1. Obtain AMIE template.  During the pilot phase this can be obtained by completing the registration form.  A self-extracting copy of the template will be e-mailed to you.
  2. Open the self extracting file and follow on screen instructions
  3. Save the resulting AMIE template ('My AMIE folder') onto a USB drive/stick.
  4. Double click on the 'My AMIE folder' to open it
  5. Copy the files that you wish to access using AMIE into the folder called 'My AMIE files'.  (Any type of file can be placed in here e.g. Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, pdf files etc.  Over time you can add to this folder as you come across files that you want easy access to)
  6. Open the file index.htm.  (this is the 'homepage' of My AMIE)  This will open the page in your web browser.  You will need to edit this page to adjust it to meet your needs.  Click on the edit button of your web browser (often situated within the standard buttons at the top of the browser)  This should be set by default to 'edit with Microsoft Word'.  The page should now open in Microsoft Word.  This page can now be edited.  It is suggested that the table format (e.g. cell dimensions etc) is left as it is.  The text in italics indicates text that you may wish to replace with your own.  To edit an existing 'hyperlink' right click on it and then select 'edit hyperlink'.
  7. You now need to create a hyperlinks to the files you have placed within your 'My AMIE folder'
  • make sure the file is in the 'My AMIE files' folder
  • write the name of the file in the index.htm page under the most appropriate title e.g. NICE epilepsy guideline.
  • then select the text, right click and select hyperlink.  Then choose 'existing file or web page' and then select the file within the 'My AMIE files' folder.
  1. Creating hyperlinks to webpages.  You may wish to hyperlink to web-pages or documents stored online.  This may have the advantages that you are linking to a resource that is renewed and kept upto date.  The disadvantages are that you will require internet access at the time of requirement and this may not always be available and will be slower to access
  2. It is suggested that you do not alter the filenames of the .htm pages.  Note that there are several pages within the AMIE template (index, page 2, page 3, page 4 and template)  These are available to allow you to create pages with a specific range of resources or to suit a specific clinic etc.  For example you could keep general resources on the index page and specific resources on a separate page.  The title (not filename) can be changed at the top of each page (e.g. Page 2 Title)Also if you wish you can change the links to the different page numbers at the top right of each page to text.  (for example change '2' to epilepsy on each page)
  3. The 'template.htm' page is there to allow you to create extra pages if 4 is not enough!  Open up the template page and then save as the page number you require (e.g. Page 5.htm)  You will then need to create a hyperlink to this page by adding to the page numbers in the top right corner of each page.  Insert a '5' next to the 1 2 3 4. Select the 5 then right click selecting hyperlink.  Then hyperlink to 'Page 5.htm'  For speed you can then copy '1 2 3 4 5' and past into the same spot on each htm page.

Using AMIE

  1. insert the USB stick/drive into the available PC and double click on index.htm within the My AMIE folder
  2. This will open the page in your default web browser (e.g. Internet Explorer)
  3. Connect to the internet if required
  4. Browse to the require file via your My AMIE index page.
  5. Print out if required

Backup

Clearly as with any files it is essential to backup your resource.  This can easily be done by copying the entire 'My AMIE' folder and keeping the copy elsewhere e.g. on your home/work desktop.  You may confuse yourself if you when editing your AMIE resource you make different changes on different copies so only ever edit one particular copy of AMIE rather than the backup!
